What 샨 means
Its meaning comes from context, not a fixed idea. Documented in 1464, a Buddhist text uses 샨 as a kugyol gloss for Chinese 說, “speak, say, tell.” It supplies the Korean reading’s ending, rather than naming an object.
That use belongs to annotating Chinese writing for Korean reading. A separate 1925 Korean source records 샨 for Japanese シヤン, “beautiful,” traced to German schön. That is a loan spelling, not a permanent definition.
Specialist when isolated; inside a Korean word or name, let the surrounding text decide.
A lone 샨 promises nothing; ask which word or source it belongs to.

1Why does 샨 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
