What 셰 means
Press T, then ShiftP in Korean input mode.
On the standard two-set layout, T enters the consonant ㅅ and ShiftP the vowel ㅖ; the Korean input method joins them into 셰.
What does 셰 mean?
Today, 셰 usually has meaning only inside a word.
Hangul combines consonant and vowel letters in a written syllable block: 셰 joins ㅅ and ㅖ. In Middle Korean, an earlier form of Korean, 셰 meant “vertical.” It appears with that meaning in the 15th-century Korean work 금강경삼가해, a translation and commentary on the Buddhist Diamond Sutra. That historical word is separate from modern loanwords such as 셰프 and 셰어 하우스.
셰프 or 쉐프?
For French chef, use the Korean spelling 셰프.
셰 and 쉐 are different syllable blocks: 셰 contains the vowel letter ㅖ, while 쉐 contains ㅞ. As of 2026, the National Institute of Korean Language recommends 셰프 for chef, the French word for a professional cook.
Neutral as a written Korean syllable; the surrounding word gives it tone.
