What 셧 means
Its meaning comes from the whole Korean word.
The National Institute of Korean Language, a Korean language institute, records 셧가래 (“rafter”) in texts dated 1748 and 1768 and in a 19th-century text. It traces forms through 셕가래 and 석가래 to modern 서까래.
Hangul groups consonants and vowels into blocks, one syllable per block; a block is not automatically a word.
