What 숊 means
“Syolp” labels the structure, not a Korean word. ᄉ is the opening consonant, ᅭ the vowel, and ᆵ the final ㄹㅍ cluster. These Hangul letters are called jamo; the surrounding word supplies the meaning.
Hangul was devised at King Sejong’s court in 1443. The 1446 book Hunminjeongeum explained it as an easier way to write Korean than adapting Chinese characters. Hangul appeared in Buddhist and Confucian books, private letters, and daily writing, while official records long favored Chinese characters. It became Korea’s official script in 1894. Japanese rule from 1910 brought suppression, so teaching Hangul helped preserve Korean writing.
Unicode can also store 숊 as 숊, three jamo. Raw text matching may distinguish this sequence from the combined block; normalization, a text-standardization step, treats the spellings as equivalent.
