What 탑 means
탑 means “tower,” especially a Buddhist pagoda. Korean also uses it for other tall or commemorative structures; context decides which sense you need.
The word comes from Sanskrit stupa and Pali thupa through Chinese 塔婆. Those relic monuments reached Korea through China with Buddhism; wooden pagodas gave way to stone in the early seventh century because fire made wood fragile. Around the tenth century, Seon Buddhism weakened relic-centered pagoda worship.

1Why does 탑 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
