Hangul Syllable Tae

9437/11172

태 is a Korean Hangul syllable, pronounced tae, not a word with one fixed meaning by itself. Its meaning comes from the larger word — 태아, 태양열 and 태만하다 use the same sound with different Hanja roots. Copy it from the palette above, or type ㅌ then ㅐ in a Korean IME.

What 태 means

It is a syllable, not one fixed word. For “what does 태 mean”, read the surrounding word: the same sound appears in 태아 (“fetus”), 태양열 (“solar heat”), 태만하다 (“be negligent”) and 태엽 (“mainspring”), with different Hanja roots.

“태 meaning by itself” has no reliable single translation. Treat a lone block as incomplete unless a name or surrounding word supplies the context; do not guess “sun” or “attitude” from the syllable alone.

Where did 태 come from?

Its documented lineage starts with Hangul, not with a standalone sign. The first documentary record of Hangul’s creation is dated 1443, and Hunminjeongeum Haerye was published in 1446. The script gave spoken Korean a learnable everyday writing system separate from Chinese characters. As of 2026, the opened sources do not establish the first appearance of this exact block.

Hangul stacks sounds into blocks: 태 joins an initial consonant and a medial vowel, with no final consonant. Unicode keeps the same syllable both as one precomposed block and as component jamo, so input systems can compose it or split it apart.

How do I type 태?

Type ㅌ, then ㅐ in a Korean IME. On standard 2-set Dubeolsik, the QWERTY keys are X then O; the IME composes the block. If the order is wrong, or the input mode is still Latin, you will not get 태.

As a bare character, it reads as Korean writing or a fragment, not a universal reaction.

Do not translate a lone 태 as “sun” or “attitude.”

ㅌ ㅐ For “태 vs ㅌ ㅐ”, the former is one precomposed Hangul syllable; the latter are component jamo. Normalization can move between representations without changing the Korean text.

Questions people ask

1

is 태 an emoji?

No. It is a Hangul syllable block; a Korean font draws the glyph, and it has no emoji presentation, vendor artwork, skin-tone variants, or emoji reaction meaning.
