What 탁 means
Alone, 탁 imitates one sharp impact.
In 무릎을 탁 치다 (“slap your knee”), it punctuates the moment an idea clicks.
How did Hangul take shape?
Hangul was devised to make writing Korean easier. It was recorded in 1443 and introduced in a 1446 guide. Earlier systems—Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal—adapted Chinese characters for Korean.
Religious, Confucian, and practical print widened Hangul’s use after the late 16th century; it became Korea’s official writing system in 1894. Fonts can draw 탁’s parts differently without changing the syllable.
Neutral in Korean words; emphatic alone.
“탁 치니 억 하고 죽었다” (“a tap, a gasp, then death”) recalls Park Jong-chul’s 1987 torture cover story; avoid it in talk about state violence.

1Questions people ask
1Why does 탁 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
