hangul syllable tebs

Hangul syllable tebs

9567/11172

텞 is one Hangul syllable block, built from ㅌ, ㅔ, and the final cluster ㅄ. The block gives a syllable, but the surrounding Korean spelling supplies the word's meaning. If someone sends only 텞, ask what word or input task it belongs to.

What 텞 means

It is one Hangul syllable block; the word supplies its meaning.

It is built from ㅌ (initial consonant), ㅔ (vowel), and final ㅄ (a cluster of two consonants). Those parts explain the Unicode label “tebs”; it is a written-form label, not a Korean word or pronunciation guide.

The Korean alphabet was created in 1443. Hunminjeongeum, a book explaining how its letters work, was completed in 1446. The script aimed to make Korean writing accessible beyond people trained in literary Chinese.

Why is Hangul written in syllable blocks?

Hangul letters are grouped into square syllable cells. Unicode can represent 텞 as one precomposed character or as the conjoining-jamo sequence 텞. Shaping software can arrange that sequence into the same visible square, even though the encoded sequences differ.

One possible influence is Phags-pa, a square script for recording sounds. The Mongol-led Yuan court commissioned it in 1265 and promulgated it in 1269; it reached Goryeo, a Korean kingdom. Some Korean scholarship proposes that it influenced Hunminjeongeum, but the connection is not settled.

Hangul's social role changed with its setting. Under Joseon, literary Chinese dominated elite public writing, while Hangul was strongly associated with women's private letters, novels, and household learning. Reforms declared Hangul the national script in 1894. Japanese colonial rule restricted its public use; after 1945, it became a foundation of Korean education and cultural life.

How do I type 텞?

On the Korean 2-set keyboard, press x, p, q, then t.

This standard layout maps x to ㅌ, p to ㅔ, q to ㅂ, and t to ㅅ; the last two inputs form final ㅄ. If the keys appear separately, the input method must support Hangul composition.

Use 텞 only when software needs conjoining jamo. Unicode treats it as an equivalent spelling of 텞, but its encoded sequence is different.

Neutral as writing; its meaning depends on the Korean word around it.

A lone block gives too little context to infer a message; ask what word or input task it belongs to.
