hangul syllable tenj

Hangul syllable tenj

9554/11172

텑 spells a Korean syllable; the character alone has no fixed message meaning. Its final double consonant ㄵ changes with what follows: in 앉다, the following ㄷ becomes tense; in 앉아, ㅈ begins the next syllable.

What 텑 means

It spells a Korean syllable; read it as part of Korean text.

The block combines ㅌ, ㅓ and final cluster ㄵ (ㄴ ㅈ). Korean Revised Romanization, the standard Latin spelling system for Korean, writes these parts as t, eo and nj. The same cluster appears in 앉다 (“to sit”): the following ㄷ becomes a tense, tightened t; in 앉아, ㅈ starts the next syllable before its vowel.

Hangul was designed to write Korean

Hangul was developed under King Sejong in 1443 and promulgated in 1446 so people could write Korean without first learning Chinese characters. An early printed work using it appeared in 1447: the court poem 용비어천가 (“Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven”). Hangul later appeared in translations, practical books and literature; 텑 follows its system for spelling Korean syllables.

Why can 텑 appear as separate letters?

Unicode permits one block or a sequence of jamo.

Jamo are Hangul’s individual consonant and vowel letters. The decomposed form is 턵, a sequence of three jamo for the initial consonant, vowel and final cluster. Unicode normalization, a standard text-consistency process, can convert it to the precomposed block 텑 without changing the syllable.

1

Why does 텑 appear as separate letters?

It is probably stored in decomposed form: 턵 uses separate Hangul jamo for the consonant, vowel and final cluster. Unicode normalization can convert that sequence to the single block 텑 without changing the syllable.

Why is 텑 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
