What 틈 means
On a Korean two-set keyboard, xma forms 틈.
On the standard Korean two-set layout (Dubeolsik), x enters initial ㅌ, m enters vowel ㅡ, and a enters final ㅁ. These are Korean component letters, or jamo; the input method combines them into a syllable block. A font controls how text looks, while the input method composes the block as you type.
Unicode can store 틈 as one precomposed syllable or as the conjoining jamo sequence 틈. Normalization, a standard text-format conversion, can switch between those forms without changing the intended text. The conjoining letters are different code points from the keyboard forms ㅌ, ㅡ, and ㅁ.
What does 틈 mean?
It means a gap, opening, free moment, or opportunity.
In a wall, 틈 is a crack; in a schedule, a free moment; between people, distance or strain. 틈이 나다 means a free moment opens up, while 틈을 타다 means using an opening. A Korean dictionary also records a distinct pitch pattern for speakers in South Gyeongsang, a region in southeastern Korea.
An older written form, 틈〮, appears before 1517 in 번역박통사, a Korean version of a Chinese conversation textbook. One proposed etymology connects 틈 to the Korean verb stem 트- (open) plus the noun-forming ending -ㅁ. Hangul was created in 1443, and its purpose was explained in 1446: to make written Korean more accessible.
Plain Korean vocabulary; the sentence supplies the tone.
