In 웹툰, 웹 is the Korean spelling of English “web,” and 툰 represents “toon,” clipped from English “cartoon.” Together, they name digital comics, especially the Korean vertical-scroll format. The term entered Korean comics usage in 2000 and gained wider recognition in the mid-2000s.
Hangul forms syllable blocks: 툰 combines ㅌ, ㅜ, and ㄴ. Hangul was created in 1443 and first called Hunminjeongeum. The Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon, published in 1446, explained the letters’ design and use. If 툰 appears as a box, the font lacks this Hangul character.
