hangul syllable twaenh

Hangul Syllable Twaenh

9695/11172

퇞 is a Korean syllable block, not a word by itself; its sound is read as part of the Korean word containing it. It combines ㅌ, ㅙ, and final ㄶ, whose effect can change with the next syllable. A Korean keyboard input method can assemble it as you type.

What 퇞 means

퇞 is one Korean syllable, not a standalone word.

Hangul, the Korean writing system, groups consonant and vowel letters—called jamo—into blocks for syllables. In 퇞, ㅌ begins the syllable, ㅙ is its vowel, and ㄶ is a two-consonant ending.

Hangul's recorded timeline starts with an announcement in 1443 and the 1446 Hunminjeongeum, a manuscript explaining the script's design and use. Earlier Korean writing also adapted Chinese characters through systems called Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal. Hangul gained official recognition in 1894, lost that status under Japanese rule in 1910, and saw restoration work after liberation in 1945.

How do I type 퇞?

Use a Korean two-set input method to form 퇞 as you type.

With Korean two-set input active, type xhosg: x ㅌ, ho ㅙ, sg ㄶ. The input method combines these keystrokes into 퇞.

퇞 is the one-character precomposed form; 퇞 is the same syllable stored as three conjoining letters. A Hangul-aware text system can display those letters as a syllable block, with placement varying slightly by font.

Why does ㄶ change its sound?

ㄶ changes sound according to the next syllable.

In standard Korean pronunciation, ㅎ in ㄶ is silent before a vowel-initial ending. Before ㄱ, ㄷ, or ㅈ, it can make the following consonant sound like ㅋ, ㅌ, or ㅊ, so the whole word determines the reading.

Technical and neutral; this is a Hangul spelling unit whose reading depends on the surrounding word.

Do not treat 퇞 as a standalone Korean word.

Questions people ask

2

Does final ㄶ always sound the same?

No. ㅎ in ㄶ may be silent before a vowel-starting ending or affect the next consonant; read the whole Korean word to know which sound applies.

Why did my keyboard leave jamo separate?

Korean input may have been off, or the keyboard may have output individual jamo instead of composing a syllable. Activate a Korean two-set input method so the keystrokes combine into 퇞.
