hangul syllable twaep

Hangul syllable 퇲

9715/11172

퇲 is a syllable block in Hangul, the Korean writing system: it combines initial ㅌ, vowel ㅙ, and final ㅍ. These parts spell one syllable pattern; a word’s meaning comes from the surrounding word. A Korean IME (keyboard input method) can build the block from those three roles.

What 퇲 means

It spells one Korean syllable pattern; it does not translate a word.

The block combines initial ㅌ, vowel ㅙ, and final ㅍ. In connected Korean speech, a final consonant can sound different before the next syllable, so its role in the word matters.

Hangul was created in 1443; the 1446 Hunminjeongeum manuscript explained the script’s purpose and principles. Before Hangul, Korean writing used Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean) and systems such as Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal, which adapted Chinese characters to Korean. Hangul gave Korean a script organized around its sounds, with letters grouped into syllable blocks. It coexisted with Hanja and appeared in Buddhist and Confucian translations, practical books, labels, letters, and literature.

Why does 퇲 display as separate letters?

That usually means you are seeing jamo, not the finished syllable block.

A Hangul syllable can be stored as one precomposed block or as a sequence of conjoining jamo, the letter parts used to form syllables. Compatibility jamo—the standalone forms ㅌ, ㅙ, and ㅍ—are spacing characters, not composition instructions, so pasting them may leave them separate. A font or app can also display a decomposed sequence as separate pieces while preserving the same intended syllable.

How do I type 퇲?

A Korean IME composes the three roles into one block.

With Korean input active, enter the consonant ㅌ, vowel ㅙ, and final consonant ㅍ in that order; the input method should compose 퇲. Some input methods infer from what follows whether a consonant closes the current syllable or starts the next one.
