hangul syllable ulg

Hangul syllable Ulg

6842/11172

욹 is a Korean syllable block, not a word with a fixed meaning on its own. It combines silent initial ㅇ, vowel ㅜ, and final cluster ㄺ; what follows affects how the cluster sounds inside a word.

What 욹 means

Context gives it a word meaning; alone, it doesn't name anything. Hangul writes Korean syllables as blocks: each has an initial consonant, a vowel, and sometimes a final consonant or cluster. In 욹, ㅇ is a silent initial, ㅜ is the vowel, and ㄺ is the final cluster made of ㄹ plus ㄱ. This is one written syllable inside a Korean word, not a complete word with its own fixed definition.

Hangul was devised by King Sejong in 1443 so people could write Korean in a script suited to its sounds, rather than relying on Chinese characters. A book called Hunminjeongeum, published in 1446, explained the new script's purpose and design.

How do I type 욹 on a Korean keyboard?

Use Korean 2-set input; d-n-f-r composes 욹. On a QWERTY keyboard, d enters ㅇ, n enters ㅜ, f enters ㄹ, and r enters ㄱ; the Korean input method combines them into 욹. If the letters stay separate, the input method is set to raw jamo or syllable composition is off.

Why does the ㄺ ending sound change in a word?

The sound of ㄺ depends on what follows. At a word's end and before most consonants, only ㄱ is heard, like a short k; before an ending that starts with a vowel, ㄱ can begin the next syllable while ㄹ remains at the end of the first.

In a Korean word, it is neutral spelling; alone, it looks like a fragment rather than a complete message.

Do not mistake it for 울: 욹 has final cluster ㄺ, while 울 ends in ㄹ.
