Hangul syllable Um

움 has no single meaning outside its Korean word: it appears in words for a bud or shoot, a dugout shelter, and noun-like forms such as 추움. The verb 움트다 means “to bud”; the clipped texting ending is usually 음, with a different vowel.

What 움 means

The Korean word around it decides.

On its own, 움 has no single dependable English translation. In Korean words it can mean “bud” or “shoot,” or name a dugout or pit: 움트다 means “to bud,” while 움막 and 움집 are dugout-like shelters. Forms such as 추움 and 더움 make it a noun-like form for cold or heat.

The dugout sense appears in the Korean verse work 용비어천가 in 1447; the bud sense is first attested in 구급방언해 in 1466. Separately, the nominalizing ending -ㅁ and forms -옴/-움 were active in 15th-century Korean. This ending turns a descriptive word into a noun; when it developed remains unresolved.

Why does Korean texting end in -음?

That clipped ending is 음, with a different vowel.

A 2024 messenger-corpus study found sentence-final -(으)ㅁ more likely among younger texters and in close, egalitarian relationships. In 있음, 없음, and 먹었음, it gives a message a clipped, matter-of-fact finish. Korean spelling uses -음 after a consonant and -ㅁ after a vowel.

움 is one Korean syllable block.

Hangul is the Korean alphabet: its consonant and vowel letters are arranged into syllable blocks. 움 combines initial ㅇ, which is silent at the start of a syllable, vowel ㅜ, with a sound like “oo” in “moon,” and final ㅁ, which sounds like “m.” Hangul was designed to write Korean sounds and make written Korean easier to learn for people who found Chinese characters difficult.

Early Korean writing presents 움 as an ordinary block in that system, not as a separately invented sign. Its meaning comes from the word or grammatical form around it.

Typeface can change the spacing and placement of ㅇ, ㅜ, and ㅁ inside the block. Those layout changes do not change the syllable or create a new Korean word.

In words, 움 follows the word’s meaning; sentence-final -음 sounds clipped and casual.

In 있음, the ending is 음 (ㅡ), not 움 (ㅜ).

Why does 움 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
