What 윂 means
It represents one Hangul syllable, not a complete word by default.
Read it approximately as “wep”: initial ㅇ is silent, ㅞ gives a “we” vowel, and final ㅍ closes the syllable with p, without a vowel after it. A Korean word containing 윂 supplies its meaning. Hangul was designed to write Korean speech more directly than Chinese-character writing, which did not fit Korean sounds neatly. The script is first recorded in 1443; a 1446 explanatory book, Hunminjeongeum, described its letters and syllable structure. Earlier names included 언문 (“vernacular writing”) and 국문 (“national writing”); Hangeul became widespread as the public name by 1928. Like other Hangul blocks, 윂 combines an opening consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant.
How do I type 윂?
Use a Korean input method and enter ㅇ ㅞ ㅍ. A Korean input method combines Hangul letters as you type; it should form 윂 from that sequence. “Wep” is a pronunciation guide, not a keyboard shortcut.
Some systems store the syllable as decomposed jamo: 윂. Unicode NFC normalization—a standard way to combine equivalent text sequences—recomposes it into 윂. When a workflow needs one precomposed block, normalize the sequence to NFC.
Why does 윂 show as a box?
A replacement box means the glyph is missing from the display. A font or rendering system without support for 윂 may show a square or replacement mark. That fallback is a display failure; it does not change the character’s identity. A font with coverage for this Hangul block can render it.
Fonts can draw the same character with different proportions or stroke details while preserving its identity.
