Hangul Syllable Yaem

6569/11172

On a Korean two-set keyboard, enter the jamo (basic Hangul letters) ㅇ, ㅒ, then ㅁ; the IME joins them into 얨. By itself, this isolated syllable does not identify a word; its meaning comes from the surrounding Korean text.

What 얨 means

Use the Korean two-set keyboard: ㅇ, ㅒ, ㅁ.

On Dubeolsik input, enter the initial consonant ㅇ, the vowel ㅒ, and the final consonant ㅁ in that order; the Korean IME joins them into one syllable block. With the standard QWERTY mapping, press D, ShiftO, A.

What does 얨 mean by itself?

By itself, it gives no clear word meaning. The block combines an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant, but Korean word meaning comes from how syllables are used in context.

The earliest official record places the creation of Hangul’s original 28 letters under King Sejong of Joseon in 1443. The 1446 Hunminjeongeum, a text introducing the script, explains its principles and use.

Hangul let Korean speakers write their language without first learning the Chinese characters used in elite literary life. Common people, women’s correspondence, and Buddhist books carried it beyond those circles; popular novels widened its reach in the 17th and 18th centuries. After the Gabo Reform, Hangul entered official documents.

Why does 얨 split into jamo?

It is one syllable block made from three ordered jamo.

Unicode can store the same syllable as the precomposed block 얨 or its canonical jamo sequence 얨. Normalization can switch between these equivalent forms. Selection or deletion may then encounter the jamo separately, even though Hangul-aware rendering displays them as one block.

Neutral Korean writing; without neighboring syllables, this block supplies too little context for a word meaning.

Alone, 얨 may look like a fragment; include neighboring syllables when the full word matters.

Questions people ask

1

Why did my app split 얨 into jamo?

It can. Normalization may turn the precomposed syllable into 얨, its canonically equivalent jamo sequence. The text remains equivalent, though selection and deletion may treat the pieces separately.
