What 얬 means
It is one Hangul syllable, not a word with a fixed meaning.
Hangul is the Korean writing system. This block combines three jamo (letter units): initial ㅇ, vowel ㅒ, and final ㅆ. The vowel sounds roughly like “yeh” with a y glide. The final consonant, called batchim, is clipped like t with no release before a pause or another consonant, but links forward as a tense s before a vowel.
Hangul was created in 1443 to represent Korean speech directly, at a time when Chinese characters dominated formal writing. The system was explained in Hunminjeongeum, a book published in 1446. The vowel ㅒ belongs to a compound-vowel family made from basic vowel elements; historically, such spellings represented vowel sequences that later contracted into single sounds.

2why does 얬 become 얬?
Unicode can store the syllable as three decomposed jamo. That sequence is canonically equivalent to 얬; NFC normalization combines the parts into the precomposed block.
is 얬 pronounced yaess?
No—not with a final “ss” sound before a pause. The last consonant closes like a clipped t; before a vowel, it joins the next syllable as a tense s.

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
