What 열 means
Separate Korean words share 열; the whole word tells you which meaning applies. For example, 열을 받다 means “get angry,” and 열이 나다 means “have a fever.” Hangul builds syllable blocks by arranging letters together; 열 contains ㅇ, ㅕ, and ㄹ.
Hangul was devised in 1443 to make Korean writing easier to learn and use. In 1446, a book explaining the new script and its design was issued.
열 has no marked social tone on its own; the Korean word supplies the tone.
Do not assume 열 means anger: it is also the numeral ten and appears in other words.

Questions people ask
1Why does 열 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
