Hangul syllable Yeolt

6650/11172

엹 is a Hangul syllable; its meaning depends on the Korean word around it. Hangul blocks join consonants and vowels called jamo. Sejong the Great devised the script so people unable to use Chinese characters could write Korean; he completed it in 1443. A manuscript called Hunminjeongum introduced the script in 1446.

What 엹 means

Read it inside a Korean word; alone, it leaves the meaning open.

If it arrives alone in a message, ask for the surrounding word before guessing the sender’s meaning.

How is 엹 built from jamo?

It combines an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant cluster.

Unicode’s decomposed form (NFD) writes the block as ᄋ ᅧ ᆴ: initial consonant, vowel, final cluster.

NFD displays these jamo separately; NFC (Unicode’s composed form) stores them in one block. Both represent the same syllable.
