What 연 means
The Korean syllable 연 gets its meaning from the full word. 연꽃 means “lotus,” while 연인 means “romantic partner”; the same syllable appears in words with different meanings.
Before Hangul, people wrote Korean with Chinese characters in adapted systems such as Idu, Hyangchal and Gugyeol. Hangul was designed to make Korean easier to learn and write; it was completed in 1443 and explained in the 1446 Hunminjeongeum manuscript. Those are milestones for the script, not dates for this syllable.
연 is neutral by itself; politeness and closeness come from the surrounding Korean text.
A lone 연 is not enough to infer “love.”

Questions people ask
1Why does 연 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
