What 🪻 means
It is a hyacinth, not lavender or lilac. The three get mixed up because all can be purple, but they look nothing alike up close. A hyacinth is a short, chunky plant: one thick stalk, a dense column of small waxy flowers, and a few strap-shaped leaves at the base. Lavender has thin grey-green stems with tiny flowers at the tip; lilac is a shrub with loose cone-shaped clusters. Most keyboards draw 🪻 as that stout purple column with green leaves, which is the hyacinth silhouette.
The real plant comes from the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East and has been bred into blue, violet, pink, white, yellow and red forms. It flowers in early spring, around the same time as tulips and daffodils, and its perfume is famous: a single pot can scent a whole room, which is why many people grow it indoors on a windowsill. In Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, bulbs are forced to bloom in December and the hyacinth is a classic Christmas flower, so readers there may read 🪻 as winter rather than spring.
What does 🪻 mean when someone sends it?
Usually just a flower: spring, a garden, a gentle, pretty mood. Next to a photo it means the plant itself; in a greeting or thank-you it is decoration, like a small bouquet. Many people pick it simply because it is one of the few purple emoji, so it turns up in purple-themed usernames, bios and aesthetic posts with and . On its own it is friendly, not romantic; a rose does the flirting in emoji, not a hyacinth.
In the Victorian language of flowers a purple hyacinth meant sorrow and an apology, roughly "I'm sorry, please forgive me". Almost nobody sending 🪻 today knows this, so don't read an apology into it unless the words say so.
Why is 🪻 the Nowruz flower?
Hyacinths sit on the haft-sin table at Persian New Year. Nowruz ("new day") falls on the spring equinox, around 20 or 21 March, and is celebrated by Iranians and by Kurds, Afghans, Azerbaijanis, Tajiks and others across Central Asia and the Caucasus. Families lay out a haft-sin, "seven S's": a table of seven symbolic things whose Persian names start with the letter sin (s), such as sprouted greens for rebirth, apples for beauty, garlic for health and vinegar for patience. The hyacinth is sonbol in Persian, so it qualifies; some households count it among the seven, others add it beside them. Either way it stands for the arrival of spring, and its scent is part of what Nowruz smells like.
Before 🪻 existed, Nowruz greetings had to make do with or . The hyacinth was proposed as an emoji with those celebrations in mind, and in the weeks around the equinox you will see 🪻 next to (the goldfish bowl) and in Nowruz posts. It is a wish for a fresh, fragrant new year.
Soft, decorative and sincere; fits friends, family and polite acquaintances, and festive Nowruz messages.
Don't call it lavender in reply to a proud gardener; it is a hyacinth.

5Worth knowing
- In Greek myth, Hyacinthus was a Spartan prince loved by the god Apollo and killed by a stray discus; the grieving god made the flower spring from his blood, which is where the name comes from.
- Hyacinth bulbs are mildly toxic and can irritate the skin, so gardeners often plant them in gloves; the smell, not the taste, is the point.
Questions people ask
4Is 🪻 lavender?
No. It is a hyacinth. Lavender has no emoji of its own, so people borrow 🪻 for it, which is fine as long as you know the picture shows a different plant.
Is sending 🪻 romantic?
Not by itself. It reads as friendly and pretty. Add a heart or loving words and it turns affectionate; the rose is the emoji that carries romance alone.
What does the hyacinth mean in Persian culture?
Spring and the new year. Called sonbol, it decorates the Nowruz haft-sin table and is sometimes counted as one of its seven symbolic items; its scent is part of the holiday.
Does the purple hyacinth mean sorry?
Only in the old Victorian language of flowers, where purple hyacinth meant sorrow and forgiveness. In messages today almost no one intends that unless they say so.
