What ⧜ means
It is a specialist sign for incomplete infinity. Unicode cross-references it to ; MathML 3 marks it as infix, meaning it sits between expressions.
“Broken infinity” is an informal name for this math symbol, not a rendering fault. In a 2014 MathML discussion, one contributor recalled seeing it in 19th-century treatises and early-20th-century texts on uncountable infinity, with use fading after the 1950s.
A blank or box means the font or app cannot display the glyph.
Questions people ask
1Why does ⧜ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
