javanese letter ka

Javanese letter ka

16/91

ꦏ is the Javanese syllabic letter ka: a k sound with a built-in short a. In carakan words, vowel signs, pangkon, and neighboring consonants change its reading. Its unmarked form already includes a vowel, so it is not a bare k.

Text symbol

What ꦏ means

It is Javanese ka: one syllable, k plus an inherent short a.

The unmarked ka, called nglegena, keeps that vowel. Add a vowel sign for another vowel, or pangkon ꧀ to remove the a before a final consonant or cluster.

Where did Javanese letter ka come from?

Its history runs through Kawi and older South Asian scripts.

Javanese writing grew from Kawi, an older script shaped by Indic traditions, including the Pallava script of South India.

Kesongo (743 CE) and Disunuh (787 CE) inscriptions attest Old Javanese writing, not necessarily this exact glyph. The Aji Saka story is the script’s traditional origin tale.

Literary manuscripts and Central Javanese courts anchor the tradition from the sixteenth century. Printing needed Javanese type in the nineteenth; Romanization gained ground for cost by the early twentieth. A 2023 study found spelling errors on Surakarta street signs in carakan letters, vowel signs, murda forms, and swara (independent vowels).

Why does Javanese letter ka look different on screen?

The sequence and font shape what you see.

Vowel signs can display before ꦏ even when typed after it; in clusters, shaping software may join or stack letters.

Without a Javanese-capable font, it may appear as a box; an unsupported mark may sit on a dotted circle.

Neutral as writing; alone in a message, it identifies Javanese text rather than a mood.

A one-character message needs context if the recipient cannot read Javanese script.
