What 𘰣 means
It represents the reconstructed Khitan syllable ri.
Reading tables reconstruct its value as ri. Sound signs usually form compact word clusters, so this sign supplies one syllable rather than a whole word.
Made to write Khitan, Small Script stood beside the more character-like Large Script. Both drew on Chinese forms; Small Script was reportedly inspired by Old Uyghur writing from Inner Asia. Tradition credits Yelü Diela, brother of Liao founder Abaoji, with its creation around 925. A 2026 study argues it was standardized later, citing a Khitan letter unread at the Korean court of Goryeo in 1011 and the earliest securely dated surviving text, the 1051 tomb inscription of Wugulin Taishi.

1Why does 𘰣 show as a box on some devices?
