What 𘲂 means
In Khitan, 𘲂 is the numeral four.
Created around 925 to write Khitan, this script uses standalone number signs and sound signs grouped into word blocks. As of 2026, its earliest known dated inscription is a 1053 epitaph. In dates, four precedes the Khitan word for “month.”
Khitan writing outlived the Liao
After the Khitan-led Liao fell, Jurchen rulers used Khitan writing under the Jin; a Jin order ended official use in 1191. Jurchen scripts later drew on Khitan writing. Inscriptions rediscovered in 1922 let scholars reconstruct many readings.
