khitan small script character-18c8d

Khitan Small Script Character 18C8D

398/471

𘲍 is a sign in Khitan small script, a historical way to write the Khitan language; its Unicode label names the sign, not a translation. Created around 925, the small script used Chinese-derived forms and a sound-based approach linked to Uyghur writing. It served the Liao dynasty, continued under the Jin dynasty until 1191, and later influenced Jurchen writing.

What 𘲍 means

The label cannot tell you. Khitan small script usually combines sound signs into groups that spell a word; some other signs represent common words directly. Unicode gives this character a numbered label, but its historical role and reading have to be identified from the surrounding inscription.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘲍 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
