What ₑ means
It marks vowel information in Indo-European notation.
Hₑ and hₑ use ₑ for a laryngeal's effect on vowel quality or for a reduced, less prominent vowel. A laryngeal is a consonant reconstructed for an earlier Indo-European language. Unicode's technical committee accepted ₑ with four other subscript letters for Indo-European laryngeals on June 18, 2004.
Is ₑ just subscript formatting?
No; it is a distinct text character.
Formatting lowers any text; ₑ stays distinct in plain text.
