left white parenthesis

Left White Parenthesis

6/128

⦅ is a specialized mathematical opening fence. In Bourbaki interval notation, a way to show whether endpoints count, it pairs with ⦆ around an open interval, which excludes both endpoints. Use it only when a formula defines this convention.

What ⦅ means

It opens a mathematical enclosure.

MathML 3.0 marks it as a stretchy, symmetric fence, so a supporting renderer can enlarge it around taller content.

In Bourbaki interval notation, ⦅ pairs with ⦆ around an open interval, excluding both endpoints. In prose or code, use ordinary parentheses.

Specialist mathematical notation.

Without a stated convention, readers may not know how to read it.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ⦅ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
