What ≦ means
Read it as “less than or equal to.”
For example, x ≦ 5 includes 5 and every smaller permitted value. The notation developed in stages: < and > appeared in print in 1631; John Wallis put a bar above related signs in 1670; Pierre Bouguer used two bars beneath them in 1734. Bouguer's form is the recognizable ancestor of this compact inclusive comparison.
How do I type ≦ in LaTeX?
Enter \leqq in math mode.
With pdfLaTeX, load amssymb. XeLaTeX and LuaLaTeX can accept raw ≦ when the selected Unicode math font contains it.
The double bar changes style, not the bound
≤, ≦, and ⩽ express the same inclusive comparison; their equality strokes differ. Match the notation used by the document you are editing. The 2026 review found typographic evolution, but no supported culture-specific change in mathematical meaning.
Formal and technical; write “at most” outside equations if your reader may not recognize the double-bar form.
Do not replace ≦ with <: removing equality excludes the endpoint.

1Why does ≦ show as a box?
The font lacks the glyph. Switch to a math font containing ≦; changing the input method alone will not add it.
