linear a sign a301

Linear A sign A301

A301 in Linear A has no settled translation. Scholars sometimes write it as “JO?”, but that is a proposed reading, not a decoded Minoan word. The sign appears alone on hanging clay tags and inside sign groups, so its possible role changes with context.

What 𐙕 means

No settled translation exists; “JO?” is a proposal.

A301 appears alone on HT Wa 1623, a one-hole clay nodule—a small tag made to hang—found at Haghia Triada. Other examples also put it alone on hanging tags. Scholars have suggested an account mark for a person, a fraction, or textiles, but these are guesses about its job, not translations. As of 2026, A301 has no settled decipherment.

In sign groups, A301 may have a syllabic role: it could stand for one spoken syllable rather than a whole word. Scholars compare it with Linear B sign B36, conventionally transcribed “jo.” That comparison makes “JO?” a possible reading, not a confirmed value.

Why was Linear A sign A301 used?

Its exact job is unknown; Linear A served records and objects.

Linear A is the writing system used on Minoan Crete. Its earliest evidence is placed by the end of the nineteenth century BCE, with more consistent evidence in Middle Minoan IIB, an archaeological period on Crete. Tablets, small clay discs called roundels, and sealings—clay impressions made with a seal—record administration; the signs also appear on stone, metal, and painted vessels in ritual and everyday settings. These uses describe the script, not A301’s specific role.

Linear A and Cretan Hieroglyphic, another Cretan writing system, coexisted in the first half of the second millennium BCE. Researchers argue that Linear A adapted much of an older Cretan sign repertoire; Linear B, a later Aegean writing system, drew much of its graphic repertoire from Linear A. As of 2026, no specific Cretan-Hieroglyphic ancestor for A301 is established.

What does 𐙕 mean when someone sends it?

It identifies a Linear A sign, not a translatable message.

If 𐙕 arrives by itself, treat it as a reference to an ancient sign unless the sender provides the inscription or context. Its value cannot be confidently rendered from the glyph alone.

Academic and obscure: refer to A301 as a Linear A sign, not a word with a known translation.

Do not present “JO” as a confirmed meaning.
