What 𐘀 means
AB001 has no secure word-level reading. Linear A is an undeciphered writing system used on Bronze Age Crete. AB001 is a modern catalogue label, not a translated word. In sign catalogues, AB groups signs documented in both Linear A and Linear B, or proposed as shared between them. As of 2026, no secure standalone reading or first individual attestation has been established for AB001.
Linear A appears in palace records on Crete around 1850–1450 BCE. Most surviving examples are administrative: clay tablets, roundels (small round clay pieces), and sealings (clay marked with a seal) record goods and people. Some inscriptions on vessels and metal objects were offerings or part of ritual, so the script was not used only for accounts.
Linear B later became the administrative script, while isolated Linear A inscriptions continued; the last known Linear A inscription is dated to about 1350 BCE. That marks a change in where the script was used, not a new reading for AB001.
How did Linear A lead to later scripts?
Linear A did not simply turn into one later script. Cretan Hieroglyphic, another writing system used on Crete, overlapped with it; shared sign shapes suggest contact, but do not prove a direct, one-to-one descent. Linear B later reused much of Linear A's visible sign repertoire to write Mycenaean Greek, an early form of Greek used by the Mycenaeans.
Researchers sometimes use sound values from visually matching Linear B signs as tentative reading aids for Linear A. That does not establish this sign's sound or meaning. Sign lists also record AB001 as a component in complex signs A501, A502, A503, and A330, but those combinations do not reveal its standalone value.
