What 𐙙 means

A305 is the catalogue label, not a deciphered word.

Linear A sign catalogues use A305 to identify this shape; its ancient sound or meaning is not securely known. The safest reading is “identified sign, unresolved value.”

Linear A is a Bronze Age writing system first attested in Middle Minoan IIA, by the end of the nineteenth century BCE. It coexisted with Cretan Hieroglyphic, another Cretan writing system, and later supplied the administrative model from which Linear B developed.

Why is A305 beside a number?

It marks an entry, but the item is unidentified.

On tablet HT 33 from Haghia Triada, A305 appears among unidentified logograms followed by quantities. A logogram is a sign for an item or category rather than a syllable; here, its placement makes A305 an unidentified entry in an account, not a translated commodity. John Younger has proposed a personnel connection for A305 in the Haghia Triada records, but that reading remains tentative.

Linear A helped record and manage commodities and personnel. It also appears on votive objects—offerings dedicated in ritual—and libation vessels used to pour liquid during a rite, so its settings were not only bureaucratic.

Is A305 a Linear B sign?

No secure match exists; a reversed comparison remains tentative.

Linear B inherited and adapted much of Linear A’s writing practice, but that shared history does not establish A305’s reading. A reversed form of A305 has been proposed as a possible counterpart to the Linear B sign conventionally written *twe. The proposal notes that A305 has not been attested in that orientation, so the match remains uncertain.

Its register is scholarly and archival; it fits discussion of Linear A.

A305 identifies the sign; do not read the catalogue label as an ancient translation.

Why does 𐙙 show as a box on some devices?
