Linear A Sign A323

112/341

As of 2026, 𐙯 remains an unidentified Linear A sign: scholars have not established a dependable word or sound value for it. Linear A appears in palace accounts and on objects used in religious practice, but A323's few recorded placements do not settle its role. Its name comes from a modern sign catalogue, not a translated Minoan word.

What 𐙯 means

It is a catalogue label, not a translated word.

Linear A is a writing system used in Bronze Age Crete. A323 is the modern GORILA catalogue number for this sign, so the label identifies an entry rather than giving its ancient reading. Linear A is generally first attested in Middle Minoan IIA, with more consistent evidence in Middle Minoan IIB. It developed locally on Crete, probably with some influence from wider Near Eastern writing practices; it coexisted with Cretan Hieroglyphic, another Cretan script, and much of its sign repertoire was adapted from it.

In HT 29.4 and HT 31.4, A323 belongs to a sign group. On HT 96a.3, a dot separates it from the next sign; on HT 96a.4, the boundary between A323 and A344 is uncertain. These placements support different analyses, but do not settle the sign's role.

What was Linear A used for?

It served palace accounts and appeared on religious objects. Clay tablets, small clay discs called roundels, and sealings recorded transactions and the movement of goods for palace administration. Linear A also appears on stone offering tables, painted vessels, figurines, and metal objects, mainly in religious, funerary, or practical settings. These contexts describe the script's uses, not A323's individual job.

Linear B later adapted much of Linear A's sign system to write Mycenaean Greek. Cypro-Minoan is another related Aegean script. These are connections between writing systems; neither supplies a confirmed reading for A323.

After Linear B emerged, Linear A ceased to serve in administration. This marks a change in institutional use, not a newly documented meaning for A323.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𐙯 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Linear A block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
