linear a sign a324

Linear A sign A324

113/341

As of 2026, A324 has no secure standalone reading: it is a catalog label in the undeciphered Minoan script Linear A. Linear A appears chiefly in administrative records, but also on ritual and personal objects. A proposed link to AB 12 and perhaps A363 remains a comparison, not a translation.

What 𐙰 means

The catalog label identifies a sign; it does not translate it.

GORILA is a reference catalog that lets scholars compare Linear A signs across inscriptions. One scholarly comparison pairs A324 with the catalog entry AB 12 and suggests it may be a variant of A363. As of 2026, those proposals do not establish A324's standalone sound or word reading.

What was Linear A used for?

Mostly administrative records, with ritual and personal uses too.

Linear A appears in palace, villa, and archive records listing commodities, personnel, and other economic matters. Surviving objects also include stone tables for pouring ritual offerings, pottery, jewelry, bronze axes, figurines, and other objects left as offerings, so the script was not limited to bookkeeping.

The earliest known Linear A evidence is placed in Middle Minoan IIA. On the high chronology—a dating scheme that places the period earlier—it reaches back to the end of the nineteenth century BCE. Linear A developed alongside Cretan Hieroglyphic, another Cretan script that can be hard to distinguish in short inscriptions.

How do other Aegean scripts help explain A324?

They place the script in context, but do not decode A324.

Scholars infer possible sound values by comparing Linear A sign sequences with Linear B, a later script adapted to write Mycenaean Greek. Those patterns are indirect evidence, not a direct reading of A324. Cypro-Minoan is another Aegean writing tradition discussed in relation to Linear A.

Questions people ask

2

Should I read A324 as AB 12?

No. AB 12 is a proposed correspondence, and the same scholarly discussion describes the possible A363 relationship as uncertain.

Why does A324 appear as a box?

A font may lack Linear A coverage, so the software can display a missing-glyph box or another placeholder. That display does not change the character stored in the text.
