What 𐚭 means
It has no settled standalone reading. “A413-VAS” is a catalog label grouping this form with vase-shaped signs; it does not prove that a Bronze Age writer used it to mean “vase.”
Linear A, a writing system used in Minoan Crete, served different jobs. Clay archive documents tracked goods entering and leaving storerooms, while repeated inscriptions on stone vessels from sanctuaries appear religious. Marks on objects from cultic or funerary settings may have served those settings or been private; the sign alone cannot decide which.
The earliest recognisable Linear A is attested in Middle Minoan IIA, a period of Minoan Crete, and it is more consistently attested in Middle Minoan IIB. Cretan Hieroglyphic is the closest earlier Cretan writing tradition; Linear B, a later script, reuses many related signs. That connects the scripts without settling the ancestry of each sign.
Why is “VAS” not a translation?
It classifies the sign’s shape. The label “A413-VAS” helps identify this form in sign lists; it is not a deciphered Minoan gloss.
As of 2026, Linear A remains undeciphered. A sound value assigned by comparison with a similar Linear B sign cannot establish what this exact sign meant.
This is a reference to an ancient script, not a general-purpose chat symbol.
Do not read “VAS” as the Minoan word for “vase.”
