Linear A Sign A535

207/341

𐛎 is a Linear A sign whose ancient reading is not known. Linear A was used mainly for administration on Bronze Age Crete from around 1700–1450 BCE. Its Minoan language remains undeciphered as of Unicode 17.0. A scholarly analysis identifies A535 as TELA KU on tablet HT 38, a compound whose parts are clearer than its full meaning.

What 𐛎 means

A535 is a catalog label, not a translation. It lets modern readers identify the sign; it does not tell us the ancient word or pronunciation. The earliest evidence assigned to Linear A is placed in Middle Minoan IIA, with more regular attestations in Middle Minoan IIB.

Linear A also appears on stone offering tables, metal pins, and pots. Cretan Hieroglyphic, another Cretan script, overlapped with Linear A during the Bronze Age and may have influenced some of its sign shapes. In tablet HT 38, one scholarly analysis identifies compound sign A535 as TELA KU: a sign for cloth paired with a syllabic sign. Its related sign A536 uses TELA ZO; both compound patterns also occur in Linear B. Linear B reused many Linear A syllabic signs to write Mycenaean Greek, while most Linear A word signs did not carry over.

How can I type Linear A?

Use Unicode text. If your device has a Unicode character picker, use it; otherwise choose an input method that inserts the Linear A character rather than a drawing.

A 2015 paper on the Linear A digital corpus describes older fonts that drew signs over Latin keyboard letters. The stored text was Latin, not Unicode Linear A, so a sign could look right but fail to remain A535 when shared.

Why does the Linear A sign show as a box?

On your device, an app using a font without Linear A coverage may show an empty box. That is a missing-glyph placeholder, not a changed character; use a font with Linear A support.
