Linear A Sign AB080

66/341

𐙁 is the Linear A sign AB 80, conventionally read ma; it stands for a syllable, not a translated Minoan word. In inscriptions, the sequence 𐙁𐘘 is associated with a wool logogram, a sign that labels wool. The proposed trail behind AB 80 leads to a cat-mask sign in the earlier Cretan Hieroglyphic script.

What 𐙁 means

It is the Linear A sign AB 80, conventionally read ma.

That is a syllable value, not a translation: the Minoan language written in Linear A remains undeciphered. Scholars infer some Linear A readings by comparing signs shared with Linear B; shared signs do not show that the two languages were the same.

where did 𐙁 come from?

AB 80 is thought to descend from a cat-mask sign in Cretan Hieroglyphic, an earlier Minoan script. Cretan Hieroglyphic likely emerged in Middle Minoan II, an archaeological period on Crete. One possible predecessor is the script associated with Arkhanes, a Cretan site, which may date to c. 2100–2000 BCE. Linear A appears across Crete around 1700 BCE as Cretan Hieroglyphic fades.

Linear A served chiefly for palace records of goods and transactions. It also appears on ritual objects, offering tables, and vessels. Surviving texts are short and formulaic, so they show what was recorded more clearly than the meaning of the Minoan language.

Linear B shares many sign shapes with Linear A and is generally treated as its descendant. The Cypro-Minoan script and later Cypriot syllabaries show contact with Linear A and likely derive from it. On Minoan seals—small objects pressed into clay—a cat-mask-related sign may have served as an emblem or abbreviation tied to the wool trade.

what does 𐙁 mean when someone sends it?

The glyph alone cannot settle why it was sent.

Someone may be identifying Linear A, referring to its conventional reading ma, or pointing to a particular inscription. If they mean the wool link, check whether they mean the sequence 𐙁𐘘 : that association belongs to the combined reading, not to 𐙁 alone.

It reads as specialist historical-script material; in an ordinary message, it needs context to say more than ma.

A bare 𐙁 is not the wool sign; the wool association is with MARU.
