linear a sign ab020

Linear A sign AB020

15/341

As of October 2026, 𐘎 has no secure Linear A reading; AB020 is a catalogue number, not a translation. Linear A emerged in Bronze Age Crete by the nineteenth century BCE for goods records and later religious inscriptions and objects. It developed alongside Cretan Hieroglyphic, another picture-based script; Linear B reused many of its signs.

What 𐘎 means

It leaves two readings open. Linear B, a later script used for an early form of Greek, has the same form in syllable 𐀿, conventionally transcribed “zo.”

On a tablet from Khania, a town on Crete, AB020 appears after a divider and before a number. That position could mark an item or a syllable.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𐘎 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
