linear b syllable b050 pu

Linear B Syllable B050 Pu

𐀢 is Linear B’s pu syllable, roughly “poo” in English. Adapted from Linear A, it wrote Mycenaean Greek, an early Greek dialect, in palace accounts. The oldest surviving tablet group at Knossos dates from the end of the 15th or beginning of the 14th century BCE.

What 𐀢 means

It records the syllable pu, not a full translation.

On Knossos textile tablets, it also stands alone as an abbreviation, probably for pu-ka-ta-ri-ja.

Worth knowing

  • A 2024 proposal links B050’s shape to an Egyptian hieroglyph for hair or a headband; this origin remains speculative.
