lisu letter o

Lisu Letter O

36/48

ꓳ is the O letter in the Fraser Lisu alphabet. The alphabet was developed to support Christian teaching and Bible translation in Lisu, then also appeared in secular Lisu writing. Its shape draws on Latin capitals, but it belongs to a separate script, so Latin O cannot stand in for it.

What ꓳ means

It is the O letter in the Fraser Lisu alphabet.

Its recognizable form took shape in 1914. Missionaries led by James O. Fraser worked with Karen evangelist Sara Ba Thaw on it; Lisu pastors revised it later. The alphabet was developed to support Christian teaching and Bible translation in Lisu.

Other writing systems later offered different routes: an indigenous Lisu syllabary, where each sign represents a syllable, emerged in the 1920s. An alphabet based on pinyin, the Latin-letter system used to spell Mandarin, followed in the 1950s. The Fraser alphabet remained closely associated with Christian Lisu identity. Nujiang fieldwork reported Old Lisu literacy as a marker distinguishing Christian and non-Christian Lisu, while the script also appeared in secular newspapers, schoolbooks, folk literature, and music. Lisu letters draw on Latin capitals; its tone marks draw on Western punctuation and Burmese writing.

Why does ꓳ look like O?

Its design follows Latin capitals, but its script is Lisu.

The Lisu alphabet uses one set of letter forms, with no separate uppercase and lowercase. Its letters were modeled on Latin capitals, so ꓳ and O can look alike while belonging to different scripts. In traditional Lisu electronic text, letters use sans-serif type and are often monospaced, meaning each character takes the same width; this can make the boundary between Lisu and Latin text easy to miss.

A Lisu letter with a Latin-derived shape; its script identity matters in Lisu text.

Do not substitute Latin O in Lisu writing: a matching shape does not make the characters interchangeable.

Why does ꓳ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Lisu block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
