Lisu Letter Ta

5/48

ꓔ is the plain t consonant letter in the Fraser Lisu script. It starts a Lisu syllable; vowel and tone signs shape the rest. Its outline resembles Latin T because the alphabet adapted Latin capital shapes.

Text symbol

What ꓔ means

It writes the plain t consonant in Fraser Lisu. ꓔ begins a Lisu syllable. The spelling can leave an a sound unwritten after it, and tone letters mark the syllable’s pitch. The separate letter ꓕ adds a puff of air to the t sound.

The Fraser alphabet aimed to make spoken Lisu readable, especially for Christian teaching. Sara Ba Thaw adapted Latin letters in 1914; James O. Fraser and Lisu Christian clergy later revised the system. By 1917, Fraser had translated the Gospel of Mark, a Christian text. Later, the script was used for hymns and a Lisu New Testament.

Pinyin-based and other Latin-based spellings later formed parallel Lisu writing traditions. The Fraser script became a government standard in Lisu autonomous areas in 1983, and China recognized it as an official Lisu script in 1992. Lisu Christians used it across China, Myanmar, Thailand, and India; the Pinyin-based spelling was especially associated with non-Christian Lisu in China.

Why does ꓔ look like T?

Its shape comes from Latin letter forms adapted for Fraser Lisu. Some letters stayed upright, while others turned 180 degrees. ꓔ resembles Latin capital T but is a different Lisu letter. Fraser is unicameral: each letter has one shape, with no uppercase and lowercase pair.

How do I type ꓔ?

Use a Unicode entry method and a Lisu-capable font. As of 2026-10-08, Microsoft Office supports A4D4 followed by AltX, and GTK accepts CtrlShiftU, A4D4, then Enter. If ꓔ appears as a box, the selected font or app may lack Lisu coverage. Installing a font does not add a keyboard.

Use ꓔ in Lisu writing or when discussing the Fraser script.

As decoration, it may be mistaken for Latin T rather than a Lisu letter.

Questions people ask

Why does ꓔ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Lisu block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
