What ꓬ means
It is the Lisu letter ya, separate from Latin Y.
At a syllable’s start, it can follow another consonant without joining it.
Why does ꓬ resemble Latin Y?
Lisu adapted Latin forms into its own script.
Ba Thaw developed it between 1908 and 1914; Fraser and Lisu pastors revised it for Christian books, including Mark’s Gospel.
Fraser writing serves Lisu Christians; non-Christian Lisu in China especially use Pinyin-based writing. Pinyin writes Chinese with Latin letters. Burmese writing influenced Lisu tone marks for syllable pitch. As of 2026, Lisu writing in China serves education, publishing, media and religion.
