What 𝚽 means
It is a Greek letter in a math style, not a fixed value.
Its weight can distinguish 𝚽 from plain Φ as separate variables; some mathematical styles use bold for vectors. Read the surrounding formula to learn what this phi names.
The Greek letter came first
Greek adapted the Phoenician alphabet, an older writing system that mainly recorded consonants, then added Φ for a sound its inherited letters did not cover: an aspirated p, or p followed by a puff of breath. Phi likely took shape in the eighth century BCE; its sound later shifted to f, which it represents in Modern Greek.
