E. B. Wilson’s Vector Analysis, a textbook on vector math, used bold type for vectors and plain type for scalars in 1901. Later writers used bold for other distinctions. Unicode gives mathematical styles separate characters so plain-text formulas retain them; for prose, format plain Y instead.
