The math script v has no universal definition. In mathematical notation, letter styles can distinguish identifiers, so plain v and bold script 𝓿 may name different quantities. Check the surrounding equation or its definitions.
Why is 𝓿 a separate character?
It preserves an established mathematical style distinction.
In 1999, an encoding proposal reported that researchers and scientific publishers already used script, bold and other letter styles as separate mathematical symbols. It argued for encoding them separately so plain text could preserve their meaning. This character is a digital form of an existing notation style, not a newly invented letter.
A specialized mathematical identifier; outside a formula, it reads as a deliberately styled Latin v.

Why does 𝓿 look different in different apps?
