What 𝛑 means

What does bold pi mean?
Bold pi is a distinct mathematical symbol; the formula gives it meaning. 𝛑 is lowercase Greek π in bold type, so it is distinct from plain π. Physics and engineering sometimes use bold Greek letters for vectors; elsewhere, it can stand for another quantity defined by the author.
Why does bold pi have its own character?
Mathematical letter styles can carry meaning. A Unicode proposal dated 9 June 1999 records bold and other styled Latin and Greek letters already in use by scientific and technical publishers. It argues that plain text should preserve their distinct mathematical meanings. The proposal sought to encode an existing publishing convention, not give pi a new fixed value.
