What 𝔻 means
In complex analysis, 𝔻 usually denotes the open unit disk. A complex number has a real part and an imaginary part; the disk contains all such numbers less than one unit from zero. In another text, 𝔻 can name a different set, so the local definition takes priority.
The chalkboard style solved a practical problem: doubling selected strokes made a mathematical letter stand out when bold chalk was unavailable. A 1954 guide to mathematical printing described wavy underlining for bold symbols; by 1966, published lecture notes displayed doubled letters. The style became a typeset math alphabet, often used to distinguish sets, while older books could use plain or bold capitals.
Why does 𝔻 look different across fonts?
The character stays the same; mathematical fonts draw it differently. Some fonts use serifs and others do not, and different fonts may double different strokes. The chart design is one possible form, not a required outline.
Mathematical shorthand; the surrounding definition supplies what this D names.
Do not assume every 𝔻 means the unit disk; check its definition.

1Questions people ask
1Why did 𝔻 become D after text processing?
It can. NFKC and NFKD fold mathematical styled letters toward their base letters, removing a distinction a formula may need.
