What 𝟘 means
It is the number zero in a mathematical style.
The double-struck style also appears in letters used to label number sets, such as ℝ for the real numbers and ℤ for the integers. It grew from a practical problem: writers wanted bold math to stand out on chalkboards, while typewriters lacked bold type, so they doubled strokes. A 1959 Princeton textbook, Advanced Calculus, is an early documented example in print. Mathematical typography carried the board style into a distinct alphabet of letters and digits.
Why can 𝟘 turn into 0?
Some text processing can collapse its style to ordinary 0.
Unicode compatibility normalization, a text-cleanup process often called NFKC, can convert 𝟘 to plain 0 and remove the styling distinction. That can change how a formula reads when its mathematical notation depends on the difference.
This belongs to mathematical notation; in ordinary prose, it reads as deliberately mathematical.
Compatibility normalization can turn 𝟘 into plain 0, erasing the style distinction.

1Why does 𝟘 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
