What 𝗮 means
It is a mathematical a in bold sans-serif style.
In an equation, that style can keep this variable distinct from plain or differently styled letters; the surrounding formula supplies its meaning. Mathematical publishers already used styled alphabets by 1999, when a proposal for scientific web publishing argued that encoding styles separately would preserve math distinctions in plain text.
The ordinary Latin a key produces plain a; a Unicode character picker can insert this one.
Why does 𝗮 turn into plain a?
NFKC folds its mathematical style into plain a.
NFKC is a Unicode text-normalization form used to make some strings easier to compare; it maps this mathematical alphabet to its base Latin letters. Applying it here changes 𝗮 to plain a, erasing a distinction that may matter in a formula.
Math fonts can give it different outlines; no single font's drawing is mandatory.

1Why does 𝗮 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
